SCI 630 - Foundational Topics in Physics


This course provides an introduction to ideas at the foundations of physics, with special emphasis on topics that overlap with mathematics and/or philosophy. No background in physics is assumed.  The exact topics covered will vary each time the course is offered, but may include one or more of: the foundations of quantum mechanics, the foundations of spacetime physics, the foundations of statistical mechanics, (classical and quantum) field theory, and the physics of information. The focus will be on the conceptual principles underlying contemporary physics and their implications.  The mathematics needed to understand the physics topics will be covered in the course. Letter grade with Pass/No Pass option. With consent, this course may be repeated for credit. (Offered as needed.) 3 credits
