Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis

The Chapman University School of Pharmacy (CUSP), Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis promotes leadership development among pharmacy students to develop future leaders of the profession. This emphasis facilitates the students’ personal and professional development by improving their self-awareness and communication skills, while guiding them to recognize and embrace the need for innovation, advocacy, and professionalism within the field. The emphasis helps students to better understand why leadership is an integral part of the profession and provides students with opportunities to develop skills necessary to become successful leaders.

Upon graduation and successful completion of the emphasis program, the student’s degree will be conferred with Leadership Degree Emphasis designated on the official transcript.

Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis students are held to all the Doctor of Pharmacy application, acceptance policies as well as all the academic procedures as listed on the Doctor of Pharmacy  page and the information below.

Application and Continuation Requirements for Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis

The application and application timeline for the Leadership Emphasis is for students who are currently enrolled and in their first year of the Doctor of Pharmacy program. Students will submit their applications along with supporting documents through an online submission platform.

  1. Must be in good academic and professional standing
  2. Maintain a GPA of 3.3 or higher
  3. No grades of “2.0” or 70% in any Pharm.D. course
  4. Letter of intent (500 words maximum)
    • Describe why you are interested in this program
    • How would this program support your career goals?
  5. Letter of support from faculty or employer
  6. Interview with program faculty

Timeline for annual application process:

  • Application available October 1st
  • Submission deadline: December 31st
  • Interviews: January/February
  • Applicants notified of decision: early March

Co-curricular Requirements

In addition to the course requirements, two of the following three co-curricular elements are required for successful completion of the Leadership Emphasis. Specifics must be approved by Director of Co-Curriculum prior to initiation.

  • Develop a leadership initiative, interactive leadership workshop or leadership talk (TED talk style) for Chapman University School of Pharmacy Students with an assignment that students can complete to fulfill their Leadership and Innovation Requirement
  • Take on a leadership role within a professional or service organization (i.e., CPhA, APhA, ASHP, CSHP, ACCP, AACP, etc.)
  • Lead a community outreach or patient care project which expands co-curricular opportunities for Chapman University School of Pharmacy students

Requirements for the Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis

Students pursuing the Doctor of Pharmacy, Leadership Emphasis are held to the University’s Academic Policies and Procedures . In addition, these specific Doctor of Pharmacy degree standards apply:

  • Completion of at least 142 credits.
  • Maintain a 3.3 or higher GPA throughout the program.
  • Minimum grade “2.000” or above required in all coursework.
  • Maintain a California Intern Pharmacist License.
  • Maintain clean criminal background checks throughout the program.
  • Maintain clean drug screening throughout the program.
  • No DUI conviction or drug-related misdemeanor or felony conviction.
  • Meet and comply with the School of Pharmacy Technical Standards and Professionalism Policy.
  • Completion of three co-curricular required elements approved by Director of Co-Curriculum.

*At least one of the elective APPE courses from the list above (either PHRM 705  OR PHRM 706 ) must be a leadership-focused APPE topic. Acceptable topics may include Academic Leadership APPE, Acute Care APPE.
